GOVERNMENT
APPROVES BADGER CULL IN SOP TO THE NFU ,THE ROYALS AND COUNTRY
LAND AND BUSINESS ASSOCIATION
The news article from the Independent newspaper (11/12/05 - see
below), confirms the worst fears of those of us in the animal
welfare movement, that DEFRA Ministers have given the farming
lobby the green light to slaughter badgers.
Badgers have for years been the scapegoat for TB in cattle, despite
no proof.
The farming lobby will continue to support the movement of infected
cattle around the country, a key indicator of the cause of TB
in cattle herds, whilst the beautiful badger, part of our wildlife
heritage, is slaughtered to appease the NFU and Prince Charles.
The farming lobby is once again being allowed to get away with
murder by DEFRA.

SOME
POINTS FOR YOUR LETTER/ E MAIL:
An inhumane and publicly unacceptable badger control culling policy
based on weak or non-existent science, with no demonstrable benefits,
has no place in an overall strategy to reduce the incidence of
bTB in cattle.
Recent
studies (Randomised Badger Culling Trial & Defra's badger
RTA survey) have revealed the relatively low numbers of infected
badgers.
Focusing
on badgers encourages farmers to believe that cattle-to-cattle
transmission is unimportant.

ALSO WRITE/ E MAIL THE LOCAL AND NATIONAL MEDIA.
